The Songs that Stay With US

Sometimes songs just seem to reverberate with me. I find out something about a song and part of me just latches on to that. One of those songs is A Horse With No Name by America. I had never even heard of this song till about a year ago.

I was talking to my Dad and our conversation turned to my grandmother that passed away in the fall of 2009. He told me that out all of his records he had, my grandmother used to ask him to put this record on because she loved this song. I'm not sure what about this song attracted my grandmother. It could be the poetic lyrics, the soft and soothing melody, or just the moment when you find a song that seems to take hold of your heart for no good reason. Now, sometimes I'll be thinking of my grandma without realizing it and this song just seems to come to mind out of nowhere. It always brings some tears. They're tears that are full of love for a woman who was amazing and who I loved very much.

So, take a moment and listen to a song that leaves my heart full and empty all at the same time.

A Horse with No Name

On the first part of the journey,
I was looking at all the life.
There were plants and birds. and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The first thing I met, was a fly with a buzz,
And the sky, with no clouds.
The heat was hot, and the ground was dry,
But the air was full of sound.

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.

After two days, in the desert sun,
My skin began to turn red.
After three days, in the desert fun,
I was looking at a river bed.
And the story it told, of a river that flowed,
Made me sad to think it was dead.

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.

After nine days, I let the horse run free,
'Cause the desert had turned to sea.
There were plants and birds, and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The ocean is a desert, with its life underground,
And a perfect disguise above.
Under the cities lies, a heart made of ground,
But the humans will give no love.

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.

( I left out the la la's because there are a ton of them.  They do add to the song, though)
